Delhi is the capital of one of the most bustling and colourful countries in the world, yet for some reason it gets overlooked by everyone who travels there. They see it as a waiting room. The Bangkok of India. With a population of 22 million tightly packed in, admittedly it can be difficult to get about, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things worth seeing.
So here they are; 5 Things to do in Delhi
Lotus Temple
Probably one of the most extravagantly designed modern temples you will ever see. What it may lack in history (it was built in the 1980s) it makes up for by being the shape of a lotus flower. How many temples can claim that? Built to be the central place of worship for the Baháí faith. A faith that is built on accepting everyone’s belief. Yes that even includes scientologists. Built above pools of water, it has the added benefit of probably being the coolest place in Delhi. Pure escapism from what can be the overwhelming streets of Delhi. Great for people who are looking for a moment of solitude to reflect.
India Gate
Considered the country’s national monument, India Gate has developed into a symbol of India’s independence from British colonisation. Basically, it is their Arc De Triumph, but in a much more humid climate. It is home to India’s Tomb of Unknown soldiers, commemorating soldiers lost in World War 1 and the Afghan wars. So it deserves the respect of anyone visiting.
Lodi Gardens
This large and stunning park doesn’t often get a mention, which is wrong because it is Delhi’s romance hot spot. Imagine taking the girlfriend for a picnic in a park with a number of 15th century tombs. In fact, try to visualise any public park with that amount of history. Walk around it and you will get the impression that tombs are India’s version of a bandstand. Thankfully without the dodgy trumpet performance.
The Red Fort
As nations go, India is probably the home of forts. They may not have invented them but they have some of the most visually pleasing. The Red Fort is no different and one of the best things to do in Delhi. Although not the biggest or set in the most idyllic of locations, the sight and texture of the red sandstone is enough to transport any tourist away. History buffs will get a lot out of it as it is the former capital of the Mughal Empire. If that is not of interest then just look at how pretty it is. Warning: There are a number of monkeys who will try to steal your food outside.
Akshardham
The Hindu place of worship in Delhi. Well, that is the most simplified version of it; in fact, it is a giant temple complex that displays centuries of Hindu culture in its architecture. It is a must see. If you have a stopover in Delhi for a couple of days then put this at the top of your things to see.
So there are some of the things to do in Delhi. It is not just India’s waiting room, it is a city with a rich history.
